The Donald Ross Course at French Lick

The Donald Ross Course at French LickOnce known simply as the “Hill Course,” the Donald Ross Course at French Lick has undergone a $4.6 million restoration that has returned it to the original vision of its legendary architect. The restored course, first constructed in 1917, features 35 bunkers redesigned to match their original appearance, with the flat bottoms and deep, gnarly faces typical of a Donald Ross design. The undulating greens have been expanded to their vintage square or rectangular shapes, the fairways are lush and longer, and there are new seven-foot-wide cart paths and an extensive computerized irrigation system.

The classic course has been home to regional and national tournaments. It is perhaps most famous for being the site of Walter Hagen’s 1924 PGA Championship victory. Restored to its original brilliance, the Donald Ross Course gives golfers the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of history.

West Baden, Indiana

Interior of the West Baden Springs HotelWest Baden and French Lick, Indiana, together have had a storied history. For over 175 years, the healing waters of the mineral springs have attracted visitors to this region of Southern Indiana. In the 20th century, the two towns developed into a popular resort destination of international renown. Prominent guests have included presidents, celebrities, and notorious figures, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ronald Reagan, Groucho Marx, Duke Ellington, Bob Hope, Al Capone, and John Dillinger.

French Lick Resort Casino — a $500 million historic restoration and development project that includes the West Baden Springs Hotel, the French Lick Springs Hotel, and the French Lick Casino — has brought new life to the area.

The site of the Sisters of St. Benedict 2008 Gala, the West Baden Springs Hotel has been called the eighth wonder of the world for its magnificent domed atrium. Closed as a hotel during the Depression, the structure became a Jesuit seminary and then a private college until 1983. As part of the massive FLRC development project, the hotel was restored to its original elegance and splendor, reopening in May 2007.
